How to Learn from Competitor’s Ads on Facebook

Are you in need of inspiration to advance your social media marketing? Check out what your competitors are doing. In this article, Ben Givon will speak about ways to research your competition’s ads on Facebook.

Facebook has about 3 billion active users, so it is not surprising that numerous businesses use Facebook for social media marketing. If you run ads on this platform, there is a higher chance that you will have greater exposure, as organic reach for business pages is less than 5% on average.

Before you create a new ad, it is good to do your research and find out how your competitors run their ads. It becomes possible as everyone who has a Facebook account can see all the ads associated with a particular Facebook page. Average users might find this opportunity useless, while businesses can definitely take advantage of it.

Ad Library

At the moment, there are two ways to find your competitor’s active ads. The first option is to open the Ad Library in your browser. On this page, you can select a location and a category and then enter your competitor’s name. Another option to view your competitor’s ads is through their page. Find the Page Transparency box and select See All. Now, you should be able to see the page admins together with additional information. At the bottom of the pop-up window, you can find Ads From This Page. Select Go to Ads Library. Regardless of how you access the Ad Library, you should be able to view all of the active ads this business has running on Facebook.

Important Aspects of Your Competitor’s Facebook Ads

When you access every active Facebook ad of your competition, you need to know what to look for. Here is what you should consider:

  • Look for ads with the most impressions. You have an option to sort the ads by impressions. This way, you can see the best performing ads and what your competitor’s audience engages with.
  • Determine the most common media type. See if the most popular ads include images, videos, or just plain text without any media. This way, you will have a better idea about what gets the most impressions.
  • Check how long the ad has been active. It goes without saying that companies will not spend their marketing budget on ads that don’t show good performance. If you see ads that have been active for a period longer than three months, it is an indication that this ad is high-performing.

Final thoughts

After you have researched your competitor’s ads on Facebook, you will need to think about a strategy to use this data. In the best-case scenario, you will learn about the well-performing ads of your competition and use this information to define your social media strategy. For instance, if you see that the video ads perform better than those with images, you can try using the same approach. The bottom line, the knowledge you obtain through this research will help you optimize the amount of time spent running tests for your ad campaigns. Moreover, you will learn more about your audience and what kind of ads resonate with them.
